Session 1: Experiential Learning Pedagogy and Practices

  • Speaker: Dr. Lisa Melander, Professor of Sociology, College of Arts and Sciences,
  • Faculty Fellow for Applied Learning, Kansas State University          
  • Synopsis: Present experiential learning pedagogy principles and strategies,
    engagement activities and discussion about principles and how to actively use
    them, including demonstration and activities.

Workshop 1: Experiential Learning Design - Idea Generation

  • Outcome: specific ideas, e.g., project and/or assignment, to implement
    experiential learning
  • Structure: workshop on design considerations in subject-specific mentor groups.

Session 2: Experiential Learning in Ag. & Applied Economics

  • Synopsis: Showcase application cases of experiential learning in our field.
    Three speakers will present their experiential learning projects and share best
    practices in designing and implementing experiential learning experiences for
    students. Examples could vary by experiential learning type, such as
    industry-sponsored course projects, undergraduate research,
    service/community-based learning, and/or capstone experience.

Workshop 2: Experiential Learning Design - Outlining and into the Weeds

  • Facilitators: the three presenters in Session 2
  • Outcomes: Outline or redesign an experiential learning project for one course.
  • Structure: break into subject-specific groups and workshop on the design.

Session 3: Discussion of Nuts and Bolts

  • Moderator and panelists: workshop speakers and facilitators
  • Synopsis: address and discuss questions related to strategies on obtaining
    funding and support for experiential learning innovations, forging partnerships
    with stakeholders, SoTL in experiential learning, and other questions that arise
    in the workshops and topics.
